Lawrenceburg

// October 19th, 2010

Lawrenceburg, Kentuckythe county seat of Anderson Countydates back to the 1780s, when a German immigrant named Jacob Kaufman settled the area as Kaufman’s Station. In 1817, the city’s post office was constructed and Jeremiah Matthews became the first postmaster. This was also the year when the area began being known as Lawrenceburgh, after William Lawrence, a tavern owner in the city. The city was officially incorporated in 1820 as Lawrence, but in 1827 the community officially added the “-burg.” The rest, as they say, is history.Today, the city of Lawrenceburg occupies 3.7 square miles, with a population of 9,014 at the 2000 census. James Beauchamp Clark, House Speaker from 1911 to 1919, hailed from Lawrenceburg, as well as Andrew McKee (who helped develop modern submarine technology beginning in the early 1920s). The city is home to a host of primary and secondary schools and one college, Bluegrass Community and Technical College, established in 2005. The current mayor of Lawrenceburg is Edwinna Baker.
